Assistant Grounds Director

 Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Assistant Grounds Director.  Reporting to the Director of Grounds, the successful candidate will provide daily operational management and guidance to the crews focusing on turf grass, horticulture, irrigation, storm water, and safety in the Grounds Department to ensure effective implementation of the University’s vision for a world class campus.  The position will be responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing departmental operations and procedures, while providing effective leadership and management of the crews and personnel.  The Assistant Grounds Director will assist the Director in the following:  hire, motivate, evaluate, and supervise employees; evaluate landscape plans; supervise special events; emergencies relating to weather or other unforeseen tasks; and the administration, procurement, budgetary, and supply functions.  The Assistant will direct assigned crews and personnel so that expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department; ensure crews and personnel are properly trained and knowledgeable; maintain a safe working environment; and manage computerized and non-computerized irrigation system to effectively and efficiently maintain the turf grass and ornamental beds.

 A Bachelor’s degree and related work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree is required.  The successful candidate must have extensive progressively responsible experience in the grounds, landscaping, or turf maintenance field; proven record of supervisory experience at a similar institution, resort-style facility, or high-end landscape company where attention to detail and high standards are very important; proven technical competency in turf grass maintenance and ornamental horticulture; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; computer skills to include word processing and spreadsheet skills; current Virginia Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate or ability to obtain it in a year; valid driver’s license; and knowledge of organizational safety management.  Preference will be given to candidates with a Master’s degree; knowledge of erosion and sediment control; knowledge of storm water management regulations; and knowledge of hazardous materials management.

GARDENER FOR ESTATE
Full time position for experienced Horticulturist  to care for 8 acres of garden on large estate in Gloucester, VA. Responsibilities include  4 acres of  formal garden and 4 acres  Azalea and Camellia gardens, greenhouse plantings , numerous outdoor potted plants( summer )/indoor tropical plants ( winter) and general property maintenance. 
Must have experience and talent in garden design, implementation and maintenance
We are looking for a bright, personable individual with horticulture experience, neat appearance, excellent work habits , reliable with  a valid driver’s license.  References required.  Pay commensurate with experience.  Housing available.

Watershed Circuit Rider 
Canaan Valley Institute (CVI) is currently seeking applicants for a watershed circuit rider. The base for this position is flexible and could be in the main office in Thomas, WV or in our Charleston, WV regional office. Additional information on CVI can be found on our website at www.canaanvi.org.   
Watershed circuit riders provide assistance to local watershed and community-based initiatives. These services include:  
Outreach support including meeting facilitation and partnership building; 
Technical assistance in identifying and assessing water quality problems; 
Education and assistance in evaluating, developing, and implementing actions designed to address identified water quality problems; 
Project management support to assist groups with planning and implementation projects; and 
Assist CVI and community groups with identifying and securing funding for projects.
Qualified candidates will have a four-year undergraduate degree in environmental science, natural resources, or related degree; have demonstrated experience working with volunteer groups; and possess strong technical knowledge in decentralized wastewater treatment systems. Experience with grant writing is helpful. Significant travel throughout CVI’s service area will be required, therefore candidates should possess or be eligible to obtain a valid operators license.
